The computer age is not always good for us. Children often sit indoors during school hours, only to dash home as quickly as possible, so they can spend the rest of the day playing computer games. Before the computer age children were healthier, because they would usually run out to play after school, and would spend many more hours in the outdoors than they do now.
Children who spend most of the day in hot, stuffy rooms lose their vigour and are more likely to become sick. Fresh air and sunshine is important for our health. There is nothing cheaper than fresh air, and we need lots of it every day to be strong and healthy. It is a funny thing about fresh air, sunshine and exercise: it is not only good for us, but it also seems to make us happier. Children coming in from playing outdoors are usually joyful and laughing.
A fresh air-policy is one of the best kinds of life insurance policies for everybody. It has been proven that if we take a vigorous walk for at least 20 minutes every day, it is unlikely that we will catch a cold, or if we still do, it will heal up much faster than normal.
Good nutritious food is important for children, but few people realise, that the food, we eat is actually burned in the body by the aid of the air we breathe. The body requires lots of energy, and it gets that energy from burning the food we eat during the day. It is a good idea to open the bedroom window at night before going to bed in order to air out the room. Children will sleep better if the room is fresh, and it might even be a good idea to keep the window slightly open during the night if it is a safe thing to do. If it is cold, it would be necessary to cover the child with an extra blanket or two, so he/she will not get chilled. Some children have a habit of kicking off the covers, so that must of course be taken into consideration. In the summer the windows should be screened to protect the room from flies and mosquitoes.
Remember that children need a lot of energy to grow, and it is important that they get enough sleep to stay healthy. Some children require more sleep than others, but most small children will need to sleep about 12 hours each night, although some may have a nap during the day, especially when they are under school age.
